Friendship and Companionship are the two words that come in a tick whenever we think about soft bear toys. Not only are they the play buddies of our children but also are the comforters and replacement friends to those who are undergoing an emotional and psychological crisis. Considered to be the therapeutic help-mates, these furry Giant teddy Bear have a lot more to offer than what we think. Here’s a nip to the fascinating historical tale of these adorable cuddly toys that have continued to live on the hopes of all who badly needed a redeemer when everything in life seemed to be falling apart….

- Ever wondered how they were named? Well, they were named before they were born! The 26th president of the States, Theodore Roosevelt while on his hunting trip to Mississippi (U.S.A.) refused to shoot a tied-bear as a trophy to the trip and this was then glorified by a cartoonist named Clifford Barrymen who used this story of Roosevelt to speak about the then political dispute over the Mississippi line! Further to memorize this gesture of the president, a New York shopkeeper’s wife made two teddies which were casually hanged on his novelty store based in New York. Seeing the popularity of these two little furry bears, this shopkeeper(Morris Mitchum) asked for presidential permission to name them as “Teddy Bears” !! And dear friends, now you know why Theodore Roosevelt is famously known as the “Teddy Roosevelt” !!
- Nope, that isn’t the end guys, there is another story about the birth of your teddies; parallel to this story that happened in the U.S. around 1902, Richard Stieff also gave life to these bear bears in Germany, by designing the bear toys based on his sketches on bears that were sketched by him in the Stuttgart Zoo. This was around 1903. Later, they were sold and shipped in thousands of numbers until they reached America in 1906, immortalizing them as our “ TEDDY BEARS” !!
- Officially, Oxford Dictionary recognizes the year to the birth of the “teddy bear” term as 1906.
- Imagine if your teddies could not be cleaned?? Yes! Had you been born before or during 1954, you could have never imagined giving your furry buddy a wash. Earlier, they were filled with wool, mohair ( Angora goat’s lustrous fiber), and since industrialization was not that much blended with technological age, there was no process of having washable teddy stuff! Thank your stars!! You’re a millennial living in the world of nylons!
- Beat that!! World’s smallest teddy is just 0.29 inches tall and was created by a South African while the largest by an American which is 55 foot. Whoa! The tallest is known as-” Connect the Dreams”!
- And… apart from valentine’s week’s reservations, our teddies have a nationally celebrated day. Yeah! Go grab a teddy this 9th September !!
